BMW Reveals the i4 Electric Gran Coupe

BMW has unveiled the i4, an electric 4-door coupe, which will be launched overseas in November 2021. BMW claims that the i4 will be its first electric vehicle solely focused on driving dynamics.

The electric gran coupe will come in two versions, the eDrive40 or the M50. Each will be equipped with an 83.9 kWh (gross) high-voltage lithium battery.

The 2021 BMW i4’s power source is a single electric motor that drives the rear wheels via a single-speed manual transmission.

The maximum power output of the motor is 250kW (340HP), while the peak torque rating of the motor is 430 Nm. This is sufficient to propel the 2050kg (DIN scale) EV to a top speed of 190 km/hr. In 5.7 seconds, you can sprint from 0 to 100 km/hr.

The BMW i4 claims a range of 590km (WLTP) with a single charge. An 11 kW charger will charge the battery (0-100%) in 8.5 hours. A 200 kW DC fast-charger (-10-80%) can do it in 31 minutes.

However, the 2021 BMW i4 M50 surpasses the rear-wheel-drive model thanks to its 2 electric motors that provide all-wheel-drive and strong 400 kW (544HP) and 795 Nm power figures.

The i4 M50 is heavier (2215kg) but can still make the 0-100 km/hr sprint in 3.9 seconds. Flat out, it can go 225 km/hr. The range is reduced to 510km, but the charging time remains the same as for the regular model.

The sporty version’ also includes variable sport steering, adaptive suspension and an M Sport brake system. It can also have optional M light alloy wheels (up to 20 inches).

BMW claims the i4 is based upon a flexible vehicle architecture designed for an electric drive system. Standard equipment includes a rear-axle air suspension and lift-related dampers.

BMW unveiled the design for the i4 in March. The M50 model was not revealed. We know now that the sportier model will be largely identical, except for the M Carbon exterior package and M Performance Parts.

Both models offer a premium cabin ambience. You can personalize the EV to your liking, and many features are available.

You will find features such as a sunroof and ambient lighting, heated and ventilated seating, Harman Kardon Surround sound System, a 12″ instrument cluster, a 14.9-inch touchscreen, navigation, smartphone integration and an electric tailgate.

Additional safety features include 40 functions, such as Park Distance Control and Reversing Assist Camera.
